Matt 9:9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
When Jesus said to Matthew, "Follow me," He was making it clear His invitation to follow is not just for the religious elite, for the morally upright or for those who have their lives together. His invitation is for all of us who are hiding stains.
Read the following two paragraphs out loud, while standing in front of a mirror. Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. Luke 9:23
"Anyone" is a pretty inclusive word. Anyone can follow Jesus. Anyone whoever thought to themselves, 'I've gone too far...my stains are too big...' Anyone who has ever lain awake at night and said 'I can't believe what I have done'. Anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and said to themselves, "I can't believe what I have become.'
Anyone who knows down deep that they've got really nothing to offer Jesus. Really, it's what Jesus offers us that changes things. On the day He said to Matthew,
"Follow me,"something changed in him that day. And how do we know all this about Matthew's life? How do we know about his past failures and mistakes? Because he tells us." Not A Fan Study
Anyone can follow.
